Latch- Tessa and Scott

As many of you may know, Tessa and Scott retired form competition after the Sochi Olympic Winter Games, in 2014, where they claimed two silver medals- one in the Team Event, one in the Individual Event. Although they continued to skate together, and did perform at various shows, including Stars on Ice, and Art on Ice, they did not compete.

The announced their two year comeback plan in 2016, alongside new coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, and Patrice Lauzon. Their free dance for the 2016-17 was set to a variety of music, all lyrical, the last song being Latch, by Sam Smith. I think everyone who has watched the program knows that it is by far one of Tessa and Scott's most emotional, romantic free dances.

This is interesting, because many fans speculate that Tessa and Scott's relationship has significantly changed from their pre-retirement years, to their comeback, and after that. It seems that maybe this program reflects something that happened between Tessa and Scott, personally. Who knows- I personally believe that something very big changed between them after they announced their comeback. They were spotted together more often, neither of them were dating (as they had been, briefly, before), and their programs were so much more emotional, the music they chose more romantic, and their chemistry on the ice went from unbelievable to "something we have never seen in ice dance history and will never see again".

Here is what Marie-France (the choreographer of this piece), had to say about what inspired Latch.

I wanted to honor this exquisite program with a post about it, and include some pictures taken during the program. Watch the full performance here, I guarantee you will fall in love with it. Although nothing matches the chemistry they had in Pyeong-Chang performing Moulin Rouge, this seems so much more raw, and fragile. Watch it- you'll see exactly what I mean. There are many other recordings of this performance, but this one is one of my favorites, despite the annoying commentary! (This was at the Grand Prix Finals in 2016, if you were wondering.)
